Original Ojibway-Derived Nurse Rene Caisse Formula — Organic Burdock Root · Organic Sheep Sorrel · Organic Slippery Elm · Organic Turkish Rhubarb Root — Caffeine-Free · 4oz · 32 Servings — Exact Original Recipe
4oz / 32 Servings Caffeine-Free Organic Loose Herb Tea Original Caisse Formula
In 1922, Canadian nurse Rene Caisse received an Ojibway herbal formula from a patient who attributed her remarkable recovery to it some twenty years earlier. Caisse named the formula Essiac — her own surname spelled backwards — and devoted the next fifty years of her life to preparing and sharing it. Her work with this four-herb formula has been described as one of the most remarkable stories in the history of natural medicine. This is the exact same four-herb recipe used over a century ago — Burdock Root, Sheep Sorrel, Slippery Elm, and Turkish Rhubarb Root — prepared and packaged exactly as Nurse Caisse intended, with organic whole herbs and no additives, fillers, or binders.
Ingredients
- Organic Burdock Root (Arctium lappa) — A traditional blood-purifying alterative herb used across European and Asian herbal medicine for centuries, and the liver and lymphatic wellness anchor of the Essiac formula. Naturally rich in inulin (a naturally occurring prebiotic fiber), polyphenol antioxidants, and naturally occurring phytonutrients traditionally valued for supporting healthy skin, liver, digestive, and overall systemic wellness.
- Organic Sheep Sorrel Powdered (Rumex acetosella) — A bright, tart perennial herb naturally rich in naturally occurring oxalic acid, vitamins A, B-complex, C, and E, and naturally occurring antioxidants. Traditionally valued in the Essiac formula for its naturally occurring phytonutrient profile and its relationship to supporting healthy mucous membrane function and overall immune wellness. Note: contains oxalic acid — see safety section regarding kidney conditions.
- Organic Slippery Elm Powdered (Ulmus fulva / Ulmus rubra) — The inner bark of the Slippery Elm tree — a medium-sized tree that may live up to 200 years, identified by its distinctively mucilaginous "slippery" inner bark. In the Essiac formula, Slippery Elm contributes its naturally occurring mucilage content, which soothes and coats the gastrointestinal tract, supports comfortable digestion, and provides a protective layer for the absorption of the other herbs. Also naturally rich in antioxidant phenolic compounds. Note: may affect medication absorption — see safety section.
- Organic Turkish Rhubarb Root Powdered (Rheum palmatum) — The traditional Chinese and Central Asian medicinal rhubarb — distinct from garden rhubarb — with a long history in TCM and Ayurveda as a digestive and liver wellness botanical. Naturally rich in naturally occurring anthraquinones (including rhein and emodin), tannins, and stilbene glycosides. Contributes the Essiac formula's digestive stimulating and liver wellness dimension. Note: contraindicated during pregnancy due to stimulating properties — see safety section.
How to Brew — Original Nurse Caisse Method
1. Using a stainless steel or glass pot only (not aluminum), bring 1 quart (32 oz) of distilled or spring water to a boil.
2. Add 1 ounce of dry Essiac blend. Cover and boil gently for 15 minutes.
3. Remove from heat. Cover. Steep for 12 hours — no more heat during steeping.
4. After 12 hours, reheat gently — do not boil again.
5. Strain out herbs using a stainless steel mesh strainer or cheesecloth. A small amount of herb passing through is fine.
6. Pour into clean glass jars and cap tightly. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
Sweetening: May be sweetened with raw honey or raw sugar if desired. Do not add artificial sweetener.
Best taken: On an empty stomach. Bedtime is a traditional and preferred time for Essiac. If an empty stomach is not possible, take with a light meal or snack. Follow with a full glass of water.

- Not recommended during pregnancy. Turkish Rhubarb Root has a stimulating and laxative effect that may cause premature contractions. Do not use during pregnancy.
- Not recommended while breastfeeding. Herb combinations designed to support detoxification pathways should not be used by breastfeeding mothers, as compounds may transfer through breast milk.
- Kidney conditions: Sheep Sorrel contains naturally occurring oxalic acid. Essiac may not be suitable for those with kidney disease, kidney stones, or conditions requiring oxalate restriction.
- Prescription and over-the-counter medications: Slippery Elm may slow or reduce the absorption of medications. Turkish Rhubarb may interact with diuretic medications. Consult your healthcare provider before use if you take any medications.
- Brain tumor history: Essiac may initially cause temporary swelling responses in some conditions. Those with any brain condition should consult their healthcare provider before use.
- Do not exceed recommended serving sizes. More is not always more beneficial — allow the body time to respond gradually and steadily.
- Digestive responses: Essiac's naturally stimulating herbs may cause digestive discomfort, loose stools, or cramping in some individuals. Reduce serving size or take a break if this occurs.
- If you have any serious health condition, use of Essiac tea should be part of a holistic wellness approach and always undertaken with the guidance of a qualified healthcare provider.
- Store prepared tea in the refrigerator and use within 1 week.
- Use stainless steel or glass cookware only. Do not use aluminum.

2 of the ingredients are toxic to dogs, yet they gave me the instructions on how to mix and how to give to my dog.
when I looked up the ingredients ,I found 2 of them are highly toxic for dogs. when I looked up the ingredients, 2 of them are highly toxic for dogs. When I read that, I threw the tea in the trash, not risking it
I haven’t actually used the product yet but just wanted to review the excellent service I received from the company. I received a message to say my parcel had been delivered but as I hadn’t received it yet I messaged the company to advise and they responded quickly and were able to send a photo showing proof of delivery but unfortunately my postman had posted through a neighbour’s letterbox in error. On checking the photo I was able to track my package. Thank you once again for the excellent service.
