Tincturing is one of the oldest ways to preserve a plant's full character — and one of the slowest ways to do it right. We haven't found a shortcut worth taking.

Why We Extract in Organic Grain Alcohol — Almost Always

Nearly every tincture we make is extracted in organic grain alcohol, never a synthetic or non-organic solvent. Grain alcohol pulls a wider, truer range of a plant's naturally occurring compounds than water alone ever could, and because it's organic from the start, it never introduces anything to the batch that wasn't already part of our standard. It's simply the cleanest medium we've found for the job — with one traditional exception: our Super Tonic Fire Cider, made the old way with raw apple cider vinegar instead of alcohol, the same as fire cider has been made for generations.

How We Make Every Tincture

Herbs are macerated in organic grain alcohol for a minimum of 30 days, and preferably 60, giving the alcohol time to fully draw out the plant's constituents before anything is pressed or filtered. We press every batch through an 80-ton press to extract as much of the plant's constituents as the material has to give, then strain by hand to separate the finished liquid from the spent plant material. Nothing is bottled diluted just to stretch a batch further — what ends up in the bottle is the plant, at the potency the extraction earned.

Why Alcohol, and Not Water

Alcohol simply pulls more out of a plant than water can. Resins, essential oils, alkaloids, and many bitter and aromatic compounds dissolve fully in alcohol in a way they never fully do in water alone — so an alcohol tincture captures more of what the herb actually has to offer. It also means a tincture doesn't have to survive digestion to work: taken under the tongue, it's absorbed through the mucous membranes of the mouth, moving into the bloodstream faster than something that has to pass through the stomach first. As a bonus, alcohol is a natural preservative — a properly made tincture stored well can remain potent for decades, far longer than a fresh herb ever would.
