Common Uses for Schisandra Berries:

  • Boosting liver function
  • Helps with adrenal functions
  • Improves digestion

Schisandra berries, also known as Schisandra chinensis, have been used by many along with other ancient herbs such as ginseng, goji berries, and reishi. Schisandra is a fruit extract used in traditional Chinese medicine. Appearance-wise, schisandra looks quite similar to grapes, as well as growing on a vine, however schisandra is much more red in color. They grow in small clusters and are harvested later in the fall.

Schisandra berries have quite a complex taste, since they hold five distinct flavor properties: bitter, sweet, sour, salty, and spicy. This is why schisandra is sometimes called the “five-flavored berry”. Since schisandra berries impact nearly every organ system within the human body, they have dozens of uses and benefits and is an herb that can help to balance all three “treasures” within the body: jing, shen, and chi.

Schisandra berries are most well-known for boosting liver function, but have a multitude of other benefits including helping to improve digestion, supporting hormonal balance, and nourishing the skin. Studies have found that schisandra also generates alterations in the basal levels of nitric oxide and cortisol present in blood and saliva. Schisandra also helps to lower inflammation, help support stress levels, and improve mental performance.
