Pennyroyal loose is a mint with prostrate shoots and upright flowering stems with clusters of small lilac-coloured flowers. Pennyroyal loose, also known as Mentha Pulegium, mosquito-plant, and pudding grass grows most commonly in damp meadows, around pools, and in stream margins. It blooms around the world, including North and South America, throughout Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

It has been used since ancient times, including in Greek, Roman, and Medieval cultures. It was commonly incorporated as a cooking herb by the Greeks and Romans. Although it was commonly used for cooking in the Middle Ages, it gradually fell out of use as a culinary herb and is seldom used as such today. Records from Greek and Roman physicians and scholars contain information that pennyroyal can be used as an emmenagogue, and even as an effective abortive method.

Pennyroyal is frequently used as an insecticide and pest repellent to keep fleas away from household animals as well as to ward off gnats and mosquitos from humans. Some flea collars for pets have pennyroyal oil or the herb may be crushed in the lining. Humans have also put crushed pennyroyal stems in their pockets or on their clothing to ward off unwanted insects. Usage of the concentrated pennyroyal oil should be avoided as the oil can be extremely toxic to both humans and animals, even in small quantities.

Pennyroyal has also been used historically as a mint flavoring in herbal teas and foods. The tea made with pennyroyal has been used for cold relief, fevers, coughs, indigestion, headaches, and more. The fresh or dried leaves of pennyroyal have also been used when treating influenza, abdominal cramps, to induce sweating, as well as in the treatment of diseases such as smallpox.

Additionally, chemicals in the pennyroyal plant cause the uterine lining to contract, causing a woman’s uterine lining to shed. Women who struggle with regulating their menstrual cycle or suffer from a cystic ovary syndrome may choose to drink pennyroyal tea.

Side effects are minimal, but the usage of the pennyroyal oil should be avoided as it has a high toxicity level, being the most concentrated form of the pennyroyal plant. Symptoms from ingesting the oil include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and dizziness. However, the usage of pennyroyal loose has little to no side effects.
