St. John’s wort, also known as hypericum perforatum, is a flowering plant that has been used as a medicinal herb for many years. Most commonly known for its antidepressant and anti-inflammatory properties, St. John’s wort is a plant with yellow or copper-colored flowers. The herb is native to Europe but is commonly found in the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Based on many trials, St. John’s wort may help to fight mild to moderate depression and anxiety. The herb can also help to relieve PMS symptoms and improve one’s mood during menopause. St. John’s wort can also help to fight inflammation and skin irritations, as well as improve the symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The plant also has anti-cancer properties and may support smoking cessation.

  • For anxiety, take 500 milligrams of St. John’s wort by mouth three times daily.
  • For mild to moderate depression, take 500 milligrams three times per day, with meals.
  • For severe depression, take about 1000 milligrams of St. John’s wort by mouth daily for eight to 12 weeks (with doctor approval).
  • For menopausal symptoms, take 500 milligrams once daily for 12 weeks.

  • For irritable bowel syndrome, take 500 milligrams twice daily for 12 weeks.
  • For obsessive-compulsive disorder, take 500–1000 milligrams by mouth daily for 12 weeks.
