Common Usages for Soursop:

  • Antioxidant properties

  • Anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties

Soursop, typically found in South America, is often the basis for beverages, ice creams and other popular sweets. It is known by a few other names including graviola, custard apple, pawpaw, guyabano, and guanabana. Soursop has superfruit-healing properties since it is a high-antioxidant food due to its concentration of Vitamin C, B vitamins, calcium, phosphorus, and even iron. Soursop grows on a tree that can reach 30 feet tall, growing 4-12 inches in width, 6 inches in length, and weighing up to 15 pounds. It is typically oval or heart shaped and can be used in a variety of items including soups, cheesecakes, and even roasted or fried.

Many of the potential benefits are thought to be derived from its antioxidant properties. Studies show that the phytonutrients found in the fruit are high in antioxidant compounds, including alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, flavonoids, coumarins, lactones, anthraquinones, tannins, cardiac glycosides, phenols and phytosterols.

Extracts from soursop leaves have shown anti-inflammatory properties in addition to their antimicrobial characteristics, making soursop a versatile anti-inflammatory food. Studies indicate that soursop may also be a natural anti-infection treatment for root canals. Additionally, soursop is often used to treat infections caused by bacteria and parasites, including leishmaniasis. It has also been used to treat herpes, coughing and vomiting.

Recommended Dosage:

10 drops under the tongue or in 2oz juice/water daily. As a natural product, consistency, aroma, and taste may vary. Keep away from eyes and out of the reach of children.

Side Effects:

There are few known side effects of soursop, but the seeds should be avoided as they contain high amounts of annonacin, a neurotoxin that has been linked to Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders.

As is the case with taking any supplement while you are pregnant or breastfeeding or taking medication, you should always consult your healthcare professional prior to usage.
