Common Uses for Chamomile:

  • Helps relieve anxiety and depression
  • Helps relieve seasonal allergies
  • Good source of antioxidants

Chamomile, also known as Matricaria chamomilla, is native to  Western Europe and Northern Africa, but is grown all around the world today. It is also sometimes referred to as German or Roman chamomile. Chamomile is an annual plant with thin spindle-shaped roots only penetrating flatly into the soil. It can grow from 10-80 cm tall and are characterized by green stems, white petals, and a yellow pistil.

Chamomile is used for many things - in particular, it is a good source of antioxidants including chamazulene and acetylene derivatives. As these compounds are unstable, they are best preserved in essential oil form. Other major constituents include several phenolic compounds, primarily the flavonoids, including apigenin, quercetin, patuletin, and various glucosides.

Chamomile is also used to help fight anxiety and depression. Whether in tea, tincture, or essential oil form, chamomile is one of the best herbs for fighting stress and promoting relaxation. Inhaling chamomile vapors and using chamomile oil is often recommended as a natural remedy for depression and general anxiety, which is one of the reasons why chamomile oil is a popular ingredient in many candles, aromatherapy products, and bath-soaking treatments.

Chamomile also helps to improve digestion, and has strong anti-inflammatory and pain-reducing abilities, sometimes called an “herbal aspirin”. Chamomile is also commonly used to fight infections and reduce mucus congestions and is added to many different nasal sprays. Many studies have indicated that inhaling steam combined with chamomile extract is helpful to relieving many common cold symptoms. Chamomile also promotes skin health, and keeps the gum and teeth healthy.

Chamomile oil typically has no side effects, but should not be used by anyone with existing seasonal allergy symptoms.

As is the case with taking any supplement while you are pregnant or breastfeeding or taking medication, you should always consult with your healthcare professional prior to usage.
