Stinging nettle, also known as urtica dioica, is a perennial flowering plant that has been used medicinally since ancient times. Today, it can be found all over the world, but it is native to colder regions of Europe and Asia. This plant usually grows between 2-4 feet in height and blooms from June to September. Its leaves are heart-shaped and the plant produces yellow or pink flowers.
Stinging nettle contains mainly chemicals like serotonin and histamine that can be very irritating to the skin. These chemicals are found on the base of the fine hairs on the nettle. When brushed against, the fragile tips of the stinging hairs break off, leaving a small needle which can cause pain, redness, swelling, itching, and numbness.
Despite the plant's reputation for pain, stinging nettle has many capabilities, including: antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-ulcer, astringent, and analgesic. This herb has anti-inflammatory qualities that can affect treatment of many health issues. It is typically used to aid in allergy relief and other breathing-related problems, as well as to help to provide relief for urinary disorders and enlarged prostate issues. It can also be used to aid arthritis and joint pain, hay fever, and eczema.
Stinging nettle can be harvested or purchased, but it is recommended to be purchased from a trusted seller. The herb can be formed into nettle tea, cooked nettle, topical nettle, and stinging nettle capsules and tablets.
