Common Usages for Lemon Balm:

  • Functions as a natural antibacterial agent
  • Helps to fight anxiety and improve mood, concentration and sleep
  • Works as a powerful antioxidant
  • Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Helps to naturally soothe PMS symptoms

Lemon balm, also known as Melissa officinalis, is sometimes referred to as a common balm or balm mint. The perennial lemon balm plant is a member of the mint family, native to southern parts of Europe and various parts of the Middle East and Central Asia, but it is now grown regularly in the Americas and other locations around the world.

Lemon Balm has a wide variety of benefits, including functioning as a natural antibacterial agent. There is some evidence that lemon balm products, including kombucha, have antibacterial qualities that may help naturally fight infectious bacteria. Lemon balm oil specifically shows a high level of antibacterial and antimicrobial activity against candida. This is a common yeast infection that causes a number of candida symptoms, including exhaustion, brian god, digestive problems and a weakened immune system.

Traditionally, lemon balm herbal preparations have been used to treat anxiety and insomnia as it’s mild sedative effect is a well known feature. There is some evidence that this herb helps to improve hyperactivity, concentration problems and impulsiveness in elementary school children. Taken internally in food products, it also seemed to enhance mood and/or cognitive performance, as demonstrated in a study involving young adults.

Additionally, this herb can help fight free radical damage in ways that may prove to be remarkable in natural medicine. Because of its antioxidant activity, this extract has a potentially protective effect on the gastrointestinal system. One way it can help to soothe digestive issues is by preventing gastric ulcers as shown on rats. Furthermore, according to a 2015 study, lemon balm effectively reduced PMS symptoms in high-school aged women. If you have a toothache, apply a small amount of lemon balm oil to the painful area. You can also inhale the oil or tab it on your temples and neck to help fight headaches.

Lemon balm is generally safe for most people. Mild side effects may include nausea and stomach pains, skin reactions, headache, dizziness, or allergic reactions. It is advised to consume with food and start with a low dosage. You can also perform a skin patch test to make sure you don’t get a rash.

Recommended Dosage:

1 dropperful 3-4 times daily under the tongue or in juice/water between meals. As a natural product, consistency, aroma, and taste may vary. Keep away from eyes and out of the reach of children.

As is the case with taking any supplement while you are pregnant or breastfeeding or taking medication, you should always consult your healthcare professional prior to usage.
