Common Uses for Wheatgrass:

  • Strong antioxidant capabilities

  • Helps to lower high cholesterol

Wheatgrass is the young grass of the common wheat plant called Triticum aestivum. The edible grass is usually juiced into a “wheatgrass shot” or milled down into a fine green powder that is then used to create a multipurpose product for both humans and animals. While you can eat the young sprouts whole and raw, they are more often consumed as a liquid or in combination with other juices or supplements. Wheatgrass is known to be used in Ayurveda for its purifying and rejuvenating effects. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to tonify the spleen, boost digestion and help drain dampness in the body.

While most wheatgrass “shots” include freshly juiced vegetables and fruit, wheatgrass powder is pure wheatgrass. It contains many other nutrients, notably chlorophyll and antioxidants like flavonoids and phenolic acid. It is used in the human body for a number of important processes, including as a natural liver cleanser, detoxifier, and as an antioxidant to reduce free radical damage. It can also be taken as a blood strengthener.

Additional benefits include alkalizing the body, boosting nutrient absorption for nutrients like electrolytes, vitamin C and vitamin E. Wheatgrass also has strong antioxidant capabilities and can lower oxidation/free radical damage that causes aging and contributes to disease formation. Some of the antioxidants that are present in wheatgrass include: phenolic compounds, flavonoids, sulfonic acid, DPPH, triterpenoids, anthraquinol, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins. Wheatgrass has also been used to lower high cholesterol thanks to studies showing that wheatgrass is a medicinal plant meant for the heart and blood vessels.

Side Effect:

People who are allergic to other grasses may be allergic to wheatgrass. As a result of cross-contamination and cross-pollination, it’s possible for wheatgrass to contain the pollen of other plants. If you have plant allergies, talk to your doctor before using wheatgrass products. Wheatgrass is generally considered safe when taken by mouth in medicinal amounts for up to 18 months or when applied to the skin as a cream for up to six weeks. If you are pregnant it might be best to either grow your own wheatgrass or avoid consuming it.

As is the case with taking any supplement while you are pregnant or breastfeeding or taking medication, you should always consult your healthcare professional prior to usage.
