Common Uses for Peppermint Leaves:

  • Helps to improve digestive health

Peppermint, also known as Mentha piperita (different from spearmint, known as Mentha spicata), is one of many plants in the Mentha genus. Peppermint leaves are smaller, more aromatic, and a darker shade of green than spearmint leaves, the two of which are often confused. Peppermint leaves can have purple veins and the stems are purple and square, often less hairy than spearmint leaves. Peppermint also has a higher concentration of menthol, which accounts for many of the medicinal uses of mint leaves.

Peppermint leaves are often ground into peppermint oil, often used when dealing with stomach pain. There is a compound inside of peppermint leaves called menthol that helps relax the muscles in the digestive tract to provide relief. Peppermint leaves are also commonly used to decrease indigestion and its symptoms, including heartburn, nausea, belching, and abdominal pain.

Peppermint is also known to have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for a multitude of reasons, including its cooling and aromatic properties, its importance in promoting liver, lung, and large intestine health, and its help in treating conditions like diarrhea and menstrual pain. Peppermint was also used by the Romans for cooking and fresh breath. Peppermint is thought to have originated in Asia and the Mediterranean.

Other key differences between spearmint and peppermint is that spearmint typically has less of a sweet flavor while peppermint has a cooling sensation when consumed or applied to the skin. Spearmint is often added to recipes and drinks and peppermint is often used medicinally.

Peppermint leaves typically have no side effects when taken in moderation, but if too many large doses are taken, peppermint may cause headaches and heartburn.

As is the case with taking any supplement while you are pregnant or breastfeeding or taking medication, you should always consult with your healthcare professional prior to usage.
