Skullcaps come from the mint family, Lamiaceae, and ranges from blue to pink in color. It’s a slender plant with lots of branches that can reach two to four feet in height. Skullcaps were used in the 19th century because of its ability to heal animals and humans from rabies. Other names include scullcap, hoodwort, quaker bonnet, helmet flower and more. Skullcaps were also used by Native Americans to promote menstruation, heal the reproductive system, keep the throat clear and healthy, and to induce visions as a ceremonial plant.
Skullcaps have been used in America as a nerve tonic to calm anxiety because of the “anxiolytic activity” the plant contains in animals and humans. While skullcaps may relieve anxiety, it also can help those who experience insomnia and other sleeping problems including restlessness, muscle tension and clenching the jaws. Additionally, studies have shown that skullcaps can be utilized to lower fever caused by the flu, particularly when combined with other medicinal herbs such as fried bitter apricot seeds and unprocessed rhubarb. While reducing high fever, cough and shortness of breath, it can also reduce heart palpitations, anxiety and irritation.
The skullcap herb can usually be found in the form of a tea, liquid extract, tincture, capsule or crude root extract. Health food stores typically provide it as a tonic in combination with valerian root and passion flower for insomnia. The skullcap has a long history of medicinal use in a variety of countries. It has been used in both traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine to relieve anxiety, improve sleep, alleviate muscle spasms and reduce fever.
